If you’re in recovery or choosing to live a life of sobriety, you might be overwhelmed by the inclusion of alcohol in modern dating. (Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered on the perfect sober date.)

Modern dating often consists of drinking to calm nerves. In fact, some people purposely choose to go on a date at a bar or restaurant where they can get the best alcohol. But going on a date without alcohol is a better option when it comes down to it anyway. You get to know who your date really is while they’re not under the influence. This can be a big factor when deciding whether or not you want a second date. Fortunately, the options are endless when it comes to a sober date.

1. Old-Fashioned Ice Cream

Some people associate an ice cream date with the joy and fun of childhood. Everyone knows real ice cream is the best, so skip McDonald’s. Find a place that serves real, old-fashioned ice cream. This is especially nice in the summertime when you need to cool down.

2. Go for a hike as a sober date

This is a great idea for a sober date because hiking is not an activity where you would want to drink anything but water. It’s great exercise, and it provides hours of time spent talking and getting to know each other. You’ll be so distracted by the amazing scenery to even be nervous.

3. Go to a comedy show or movie

Laughter is one of the best ways to fight off nerves without drinking. When it’s over, you’ll be in such a good mood that you’ll be excited to talk about it with your date. This is also a good way to get a sense of what your date likes. If you want to date someone with a sense of humor, you’ll learn if they’re what you’re looking for quickly.

4. Have a picnic in the park

This is super simple, but it can be really fun and romantic. Having a picnic means you get to have good food without all the noise of a restaurant. You’ll have no one around you drinking and there are no servers asking if you want alcohol. This is even better if you get to watch the sunset with your date.

5. Play mini golf

Mini golf is one of those dates you always see in cheesy romantic comedies, but there’s a reason for that. It’s fun and competitive, but doesn’t require a whole lot of effort. You’re able to have conversations while still trying to win. Plus, you get to see how your date handles winning and losing.
