Addiction In The Workplace & How To Handle It

Addiction in the Workplace

Addiction in the workplace is more common than you think.  While employees initially pass drug tests before becoming hired, substance abuse can occur when life’s stresses become too much to handle. US Department of Labor reports that 12 years old started to used drugs within the past 30 days, with the rates highest among those aged 16-25, equivalent to 6% of the population in the country.

This is a critical age group for many industries, where people enter the workforce for the first time.  Sadly, addiction in the workplace is not a new problem.  Despite that, there are ways to help individuals find their sobriety.  At We Level Up Treatment Centers, we’re proud to be affiliated with many industries, providing top-quality, industry-specific drug and alcohol treatment affiliate programs.

Costs of Addiction in the Workplace

When an employee or coworker is an alcoholic or addict, their seemingly self-harming choices can negatively impact the entire workplace.  For example, employees with active substance abuse disorders are more likely to take excess sick days, creating an unstable environment for all those around them.  In addition, rampant addiction in the workplace can result in decreased morale, an increased likelihood of workplace disagreements, and a higher turnover rate.

Alcohol and drug use among employees and their family members can be an expensive problem for business and industry; with issues ranging from lost productivity, absenteeism, injuries, fatalities, theft, and low employee morale to an increase in health care; legal liabilities, and workers’ compensation costs.  In addition, the impact can cause tardiness/sleeping on the job, poor decision-making, disciplinary procedures, and more.

How to Identify Addiction in Employees or Coworkers

You can identify signs of addiction in a coworker, friend, or employee by looking for changes in behavior, appearance, or overall personality.  This can include an increasingly tired appearance, drastic weight changes, or increased irritability.  If you suspect that a coworker or employee abuses drugs or alcohol, speak with your human resources department or contact our facility.

Some facts about alcohol in the workplace:
  • Workers with alcohol problems were 2.7 times more likely than workers without drinking problems to have injury-related absences
  • A hospital emergency department study showed that 35 percent of patients with an occupational injury were at-risk drinkers
  • Breathalyzer tests detected alcohol in 16% of emergency room patients injured at work
  • Analyses of workplace fatalities showed that at least 11% of the victims had been drinking
  • Extensive federal surveys show that 24% of workers report drinking during the workday at least once in the past year
  • One-fifth of workers and managers across a wide range of industries and company sizes say that a coworker’s on- or off-the-job drinking jeopardized their productivity and safety
Some facts about drugs in the workplace:
  • Workers who report having three or more jobs in the previous five years are about twice as likely to be current or past-year users of illegal drugs as those who have had two or fewer jobs
  • 70% of the estimated 14.8 million Americans who use illicit drugs are employed
  • Marijuana is the most commonly used and abused illegal drug by employees, followed by cocaine, with prescription drug use steadily increasing

We offer industry-specific drug and alcohol treatment affiliate programs to pinpoint the treatment needs of employees from all industries. In the establishment, employees must have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is the most effective way to address alcohol and drug problems.  However, to treat addiction in the workplace, a program must match the employee with industry-specific addiction treatment programs for professionals.  This includes a full scope of treatment services such as detox, intensive inpatient care, residential treatment, outpatient programs, and alumni support.  So that, our programs at We Level Up are designed to help employees complete treatment and re-enter the workforce.
