Substance Abuse Detox Centers

Substance Abuse Detox Centers, Drugs & Alcohol Abuse, Risks & Treatment

What is a Detox Center?

Detoxification or detox is letting the body remove the drugs in it. A detox center’s primary purpose is to safely manage withdrawal symptoms when someone stops taking drugs or alcohol. Everyone has a different experience with detox. The type of drug and how long it was used affect what detox will be like. Medications used in detox help keep former users comfortable while the drugs or alcohol leave their bodies. It can take days or months to get through withdrawal symptoms for most drugs. The length of withdrawal depends on several factors, [1] including:

  • Type of substance the user is addicted to
  • The duration of abusing substances has lasted
  • Genetic makeup
  • The severity of the addiction
  • Method of abuse (snorting, smoking, injecting, or swallowing)
  • The amount of a substance the user takes at one time
  • Family history
  • Medical condition
  • Underlying mental health conditions

Inpatient rehab is designed to make the detox process as comfortable as possible and minimize all risks associated. Detox center programs are equipped with everything necessary to achieve sobriety wіth fеаturеs іnсludіng:

  • 24/7 mеdісаl саrе аnd suреrvіsіоn
  • Іndіvіduаlіzеd dеtох/tареrіng рlаns
  • Меdісаtіоn аdmіnіstеrеd аnd suреrvіsеd bу lісеnsеd mеdісаl stаff

When withdrawal symptoms become dangerous or intolerable, an inpatient medical detox can relieve and prevent possible permanent damage to the detoxing individual.

Our comprehensive and personalized dual diagnosis program includes treatment activities for mental disorders along with substance abuse detox treatment, such as:

Inpatient Detox

Inpatient drug rehab programs offer the highest level of treatment care, with medically supervised detoxification and around-the-clock supervision and support. Drug and alcohol addiction treatment is intended to help addicted individuals stop compulsive drug seeking. Treatment can occur in various settings, take many forms, and last for different lengths. Because drug addiction is typically a chronic disorder characterized by occasional relapses, short-term, one-time treatment is usually insufficient. For many, treatment is a long-term process that involves multiple interventions and regular monitoring.

Detox at Home

Choosing to detox at home can be deadly. Quitting “cold turkey” or without medical supervision can lead to severe issues such as seizures and dehydration. Inpatient detox center programs help prevent dangerous complications. People with severe addictions should seek inpatient detox because withdrawal can be fatal. Inpatient detox includes 24-hour support and monitoring.

Medical Detox

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole-patient” approach to treating substance use disorders. Medications used in MAT are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and MAT detox center programs are clinically driven and tailored to meet each patient’s needs.

Research shows that a combination of medication and therapy can successfully treat these disorders, and for some people struggling with addiction, MAT can help sustain recovery. MAT is also used to prevent or reduce opioid overdose. [2]

Where To Go For A Medical Detox?

Researching for an accredited detox center? Many addiction detox centers provide various inpatient rehab services at multiple treatment facilities. Specialized rehab programs, behavioral addiction therapy, and medication-assisted treatment are some of the many recovery programs available.

The things you should consider when choosing a detox center are:

  • The level of accreditation
  • Certifications
  • Partnerships and affiliations
  • Favorable reviews from clients in recovery

When searching for a detox center in your area, remember that other options are available. In times of need, help can be sought from different places outside your state or town. Moreover, it is recommended that the individuals struggling with substance abuse are removed from the atmosphere they are used to in the hope of impacting change by avoiding peer pressure and familiar surroundings.

How Long Do You Stay In A Detox Center?

A typical progression for someone with a severe substance use disorder might start with 3 to 7 days in a medically managed withdrawal program, followed by a 1- to 3-month period of intensive alcohol & drug rehab in a residential treatment program, followed by continuing care for long-term sobriety.

Someone with a dual diagnosis must treat both conditions. You need to stop using alcohol or drugs for the dual diagnosis treatment to be effective. Treatments may include behavioral therapies and medications. Also, support groups can give you emotional and social support.

Are Detox Facilities Safe?

Drug detoxification and medically managed withdrawal can be a safe and effective way to begin your recovery from substance abuse issues. Residential addiction treatment often includes a medical detox as the initial process. Residential rehab is a substance abuse treatment program that usually lasts 30, 60, 90 days, and sometimes longer. With residential treatment, you reside at the treatment facility 24/7, eating, sleeping, and attending various treatment therapies and meetings until you complete the program.

Usually, you will spend about 30 hours or more per week participating in activities related to your recovery plan. Your access to people outside the treatment facility is limited, with your phone and other personal electronics removed. Although visitation is usually allowed, it is typically limited in terms of who can visit and when. Residential rehab will remove you from possible triggers, provide continuous care, and create a safe, supportive environment.

It’s not uncommon for people who struggle with addictions to relapse after completing treatment, which doesn’t mean treatment failed. Instead, a relapse signifies that additional and a different treatment is necessary. Understanding relapse, triggers, and treatment are essential steps toward relapse prevention and long-term sobriety. Call one of the We Level Up addiction specialists today to learn more.

Most Common Detox Programs

Everyone’s detox needs are different. The drug detox process helps addicted people get personalized treatment. In most cases, the process involves three steps:

  • Evaluation: The medical detox center team screens incoming clients for physical and mental health issues. Doctors use blood tests to measure the number of drugs in the client’s system. This helps determine the level of medications needed. A comprehensive review of the drug and alcohol, medical, and psychiatric histories is also reviewed. This information sets up the basis for the client’s long-term treatment plan.
  • Stabilization: The next step is stabilizing the client with medical and psychological therapy. The goal of stabilization is to prevent harm to the client. Doctors can prescribe addiction treatment medications to avoid complications and reduce withdrawal symptoms.
  • Preparing Entry Into Treatment: The final step of detox in preparation for a treatment program. Doctors familiarize their clients with the treatment process and what to expect. Inpatient rehab offers the best chances of success after detox.

Detox from Alcohol

Withdrawal from alcohol is an essential first step to overcoming your alcohol-related problems. However, withdrawal isn’t an effective treatment by itself. You’ll need further treatment and support to help you in the long term.

There are two significant signs of alcohol addiction: tolerance and withdrawal.  Alcohol addiction is a dangerous condition because it can ultimately become life-threatening.  Alcohol detox allows the body to eliminate all alcohol in the body and return to its usual functioning.  An individual struggling with a moderate to severe alcohol use disorder (alcohol addiction) has a significant likelihood of developing withdrawal symptoms and could benefit from the help of a detox center program.

The longer and heavier the drinking, the more prolonged and more severe detox will be.  For this reason, going through the process sooner than later, and getting help, is critical to recovery.

Detox Drugs

Detox is more difficult for some people depending on the drugs they use. Depending on the drug, withdrawal symptoms may be more physical or mental. Cocaine withdrawal, for instance, is psychological. Detox involves managing initial cravings and anxiety. But alcohol withdrawal includes physical symptoms that can cause seizures or death in some cases. Detox often includes medications that mimic the effects of drugs to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Medications may also target co-occurring disorders or general discomfort. Drugs most dangerous to detox from and often require a prescription include alcohol and benzodiazepines. The drugs that are considered the most uncomfortable to detox from are opioids, especially heroin.

Meth Detox Program

Clearing meth from the body and overcoming withdrawal symptoms is the goal of meth detox, which is the first step of meth addiction treatment. We Level Up detox center has a comprehensive team prescribing medications that can alleviate your withdrawal pains while monitoring your health 24 hours during the detox. We Level Up rehab center will prioritize your safety and comfort because this is a fragile and challenging time for you.

Heroin Detox Program

If you try to go through withdrawal on your own, you’ll need to be prepared. Try to taper off heroin before you slowly go off them. This might limit the intensity of your withdrawal. However, given the compulsive nature of addiction, most people find self-regulated tapering impossible. It often leads to a full relapse into addiction.

A detox center can provide medications to help ease the withdrawal process.

Opioid Detox Center

In general, the withdrawal symptoms typically peak within 48-72 hours and subside within 5 to 10 days. The onset, duration, and intensity of withdrawal symptoms will be different for each person, but the general opiate withdrawal timeline includes the following:

  • 8-12 hours – Anxiety, agitation, watery eyes, runny nose, and increased sweating.
  • 12-24 hours – Nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, goosebumps, and dilated pupils.
  • 36-72 hours – Symptoms peak and gradually subside over the next few days.

Treatment programs for opioid addiction usually start with detoxification from the drug, followed by inpatient treatment.

Cocaine Detox Program

Your first step in recovery from cocaine addiction should be to medical detox in a safe and medically supervised setting. For anyone who suffers from addiction, just the thought of having to stop using can cause severe mental distress. But, with the help of a medical detox center, the medical detox process is managed.
