Josie Bornstein
Executive Director

Josie Bornstein is originally from Deer Park, Washington and has lived in the Spokane area most of her life. She attended Whitworth University and graduated as a first-generation college student, majoring in Health science and Community health, with a minor in Psychology. She has an extensive background in mental and behavioral health and has been a part of opening many new inpatient and outpatient programs for at risk youth around Spokane. With her lived and professional experience, mental health is something that Josie is extremely passionate about. She knew from an early age that she was meant to help people who struggle with their mental health. Josie is not only passionate about the patients she works with, but also the people she gets to coach and mentor as a part of leadership.  She became the Operation Manager at We Level Up because the motto matched her passion; Providing you with a map back to your fullest, most authentic potential, so you can choose a dream without limitations. 

Candace Holmes
Clinical Director

Candace was born and raised at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane,  Washington.   She married a military member who served 20 years in the Air Force.  During their travels she earned her bachelor's degrees in Counseling Psychology and Criminal Justice from the University of Great Falls, Montana and is proud to be a first generation graduate. Candace continued her education in Albuquerque,  New Mexico at the University of Phoenix.   She earned her Masters of Counseling with a focus on marriage,  family, and child therapy. Candace has over 25 years experience working directly with mental health and co-occurring disorders. She has served in many capacities from Case Manager to Administrator in Community Mental Health programs,  Justice Alliance, Substance Abuse programs and private practice.  Candace is passionate about giving back to those who serve other's and helping people realize and live their Best Lives.

Dr. Chris Small
M.D., ABPN, ABFM, ABPN, & Medical Reviewer

Dr. Chris Small, M.D., ABPN, ABFM, ABPN is a certified addiction psychiatrist with expertise in both medical and psychiatric care. He is one of the few doctors in the United States who has completed additional training to effectively treat a wide range of medical and mental health conditions. With a strong emphasis on the mind-body connection, Dr. Small brings a unique approach to healing that addresses both physical and emotional needs. As the founder of Headlands Treatment Services, he is dedicated to providing the highest level of patient care in substance abuse and mental health programs. Prior, Dr. Small served as a behavioral health psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration and the University of California, San Diego. With a solid foundation in medical education from the University of Hawaii, Dr. Small is passionate about delivering quality care to patients struggling with addiction and mental health disorders.

Lauren Barry
Director of Quality Assurance & Therapist, LMFT, MCAP, QS

As Director of Clinical Services and Quality Assurance, Lauren is responsible for overseeing, directing, and supervising all clinical departments. Lauren guides our team of clinicians on best practices and provides the highest quality therapeutic care for our clients.

Moreover, Ms. Barry assists, reviews, and helps direct the We Level Up treatment centers written website content. She reviews select website content for proper context, accuracy, relevancy, and authority including research and citations mentioned.

In addition, Lauren works tirelessly on developing new and innovative clinical programs and approaches in the hopes of maximizing our ability to help our clients. Since starting her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Nova Southeastern University in 2013, Lauren has been passionate about helping individuals and families afflicted by the disease of addiction.

Lauren has held several roles within substance abuse and mental health medical practices, from primary therapist to Clinical Director and beyond. Lauren is a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Florida and a Master’s level CAP (Certified Addiction Professional). In addition to her passion for helping clients, Lauren is extremely motivated and dedicated to helping her team become the best versions of themselves and developing their professional skills. Lauren displays great leadership skills and her mission is to inspire, empower and motivate those around her.

Karie Walters
Primary Therapist, LMHCA, SUDPT, CAAL

I was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington. I relocated to Spokane Valley in December 2024. My undergraduate studies are in Philosophy from Central Washington University, and my master's degree is in Counseling from Multnomah University. I have extensive experience working in residential facilities, with a specialty in substance use disorders and mood disorders. I utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing as my primary theoretical basis. My passions include helping individual achieve their goals and overcome the barriers that prevent them from living the life they want to live. 

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my partner, our child, and black lab. My hobbies include anything and everything Disney, playing board games, video games on my switch, building Lego sets, and playing in nature with my family.

Angela Walters
Primary Therapist

I was born in California, but raised in the Spokane Valley. My undergraduate studies were in sociology and criminal justice and a minor in psychology. I received my MSW from Eastern Washington University. I have three beautiful daughters. I enjoy reading, doing research, watching documentaries, traveling, hiking, and I love summer activities.

I have a passion for helping people and love my job and clients.
