What is PHP or Partial Hospitalization?

Partial Hospitalization, also known as PHP, is a type of program used to treat mental illness and substance abuse. In partial hospitalization, the patient continues to reside at home but commutes to a treatment center up to seven days a week. Partial hospitalization focuses on the overall treatment of the individual and is intended to avert or reduce in-patient hospitalization.

• You (or a loved one) struggle with substance abuse but also have a supportive community or home environment

• You are ambulatory and able to transport yourself to and from treatment
• You are willing and able to work intensively in both group therapy and individual therapy sessions

Criteria for PHP Clients

PHP is designed for individuals who meet the following criteria:

• Has adequate support at home
• Motivated to participate in treatment
• Experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders

What to Expect from PHP Treatment

A typical day consists of individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, skill-building practice, and periodic evaluations. A licensed mental health professional conducts all of these. If medication is needed, you will meet with a staff psychiatrist for medication management. There may also be family therapy sessions in the program. Building a support system is important for recovery, so many programs will involve a client’s family in the treatment plan.

Scheduling and programming depend on the treatment facility, but most centers use a variety of therapeutic techniques. From traditional therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to alternative methods like trauma-sensitive yoga, there are many different treatment options available.

How Long Does Partial Hospitalization Last?

The exact length of stay depends on your personal progress. You could spend several months or a few weeks in the program.
