Understand Addiction and its Causes

Drugs are substances that affect how the body functions. Illegal use of drugs such as ecstasy addiction and heroin addiction can be harmful and unpredictable. Unlike prescription medications, no government organization regulates the quality or amount of active ingredients in illegal substances.

However, not all addictive drugs are illegal. Alcohol is a legal drug that can be harmful if taken in large amounts or for a long time. Medications that have been prescribed by a doctor can also be dangerous if they aren’t taken as directed or are taken for non-medical reasons.

Drug and alcohol misuse isn’t necessarily related to how often or in what quantity a person uses drugs, but the impact their drug use has on their life. Drug or alcohol use can become a problem when it affects a person’s judgment, relationships, or general health and wellbeing. It can cause them to neglect other responsibilities such as school, work, or family.

If you’re looking to help yourself or someone you love to get substance abuse treatment, We Level Up can assist you in locating the nearest evidence-based treatment programs. Get in touch with our team today for a free, no-obligation consultation!

Drug Rehab Treatment Options

Treatments for drug addiction include counseling, medicines, or both. Research shows that combining medication with counseling gives most people the best chance of success. [1]

Medication Assisted Treatment for Drug Addiction

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole-patient” approach to treating substance use disorders. Medications used in MAT are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and MAT programs are clinically driven and tailored to meet each patient’s needs.

Research shows that a combination of medication and therapy can successfully treat these disorders, and for some people struggling with addiction, MAT can help sustain recovery. MAT is also used to prevent or reduce opioid overdose. [2]

12 Steps of Drug Addiction

Twelve-step programs serve as readily available, easily accessible, and no-cost resources for individuals with substance use disorders. There is clear evidence from various sources that early involvement in meeting attendance and engagement in recovery activities is associated with better substance use and psychosocial outcomes and reduced health care costs.

Inpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient drug rehab programs offer the highest level of treatment care, with medically supervised detoxification and around-the-clock supervision and support. Drug and alcohol addiction treatment is intended to help addicted individuals stop compulsive drug seeking. Treatment can occur in various settings, take many forms, and last for different lengths. Because drug addiction is typically a chronic disorder characterized by occasional relapses, short-term, one-time treatment is usually insufficient. For many, treatment is a long-term process that involves multiple interventions and regular monitoring.

Find Your Path to Recovery

Well-supported scientific evidence shows that substance use disorders can be effectively treated, with recurrence rates no higher than those for other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension. With comprehensive continuing care, recovery is now an achievable outcome. [3]

Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective. Sanctions or enticements from family, employment settings, and the criminal justice system can significantly increase treatment entry, retention rates, and the ultimate success of drug treatment interventions. Start your search for drug rehab now, and help a loved one take the first step on the road to a sober life!

Should Drug Addicts be Punished or Treated?

We have known for decades that addiction is a medical condition—a treatable brain disorder—not a character flaw or a form of social deviance. Yet, despite the overwhelming evidence supporting that position, drug addiction continues to be criminalized. The US must take a public health approach to drug addiction now, in the interest of population well-being and health equity.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Imprisonment for drug or other offenses leads to a much higher risk of drug overdose upon release. More than half of people in prison have an untreated substance use disorder, and illicit drug and medication use typically increases after imprisonment. When it involves an untreated opioid use disorder, relapse to drug use can be fatal due to a loss of opioid tolerance that may have occurred while the person was incarcerated. [4]

People with substance use disorders need treatment, not punishment, and drug use disorders should be approached with a demand for high-quality care and compassion for those affected.

What Percent of Drug Addicts Stay Clean?

Recent data from 2020 shows that only 13% of people with drug use disorders receive any treatment. Only 11% of people with opioid use disorder receive one of the three safe and effective medications that could help them quit and stay in recovery.

In 2021, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. surpassed an unthinkable milestone: 100,000 deaths in a year. This is the highest drug overdose number in our country’s history, and the numbers are climbing every month. [5]

Temporary returns to drug use are so typical and expected during treatment and recovery that addiction is described as a chronic relapsing condition, like some autoimmune diseases. Yet these setbacks may still be regarded by family, friends, communities, and even physicians as failures, resetting the recovery clock to zero. Patients in some drug addiction treatment programs are even expelled if they produce positive urine samples. Healthcare and society must move beyond this dichotomous, moralistic view of drug use and abstinence and the judgmental attitudes and practices that go with it.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, “Relapse rates for addiction resemble those of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.” The statistics indicate that anywhere from 40 to 60% of people with addiction will experience a relapse. [6]

It’s not uncommon for people who struggle with addictions to relapse after completing treatment, which doesn’t mean treatment failed. Instead, a relapse signifies that additional and a different treatment is necessary. Understanding relapse, triggers, and treatment are essential steps toward relapse prevention and long-term sobriety. Call one of the We Level Up addiction specialists today to learn more.

How Long is Rehab for Drugs?

Drug rehab treatment can occur in various settings, take many forms, and last for different lengths. Because drug and alcohol addiction is typically a chronic disorder characterized by occasional relapses, short-term, one-time treatment is usually insufficient. For many, treatment is a long-term process that involves multiple interventions and regular monitoring.

A typical progression for someone with a severe substance use disorder might start with 3 to 7 days in a medically managed withdrawal program, followed by a 1- to 3-month period of intensive drug rehab care in a residential treatment program, followed by continuing care for long-term sobriety.

Someone with a dual diagnosis must treat both conditions. You need to stop using alcohol or drugs for the dual diagnosis treatment to be effective. Treatments may include behavioral therapies and medications. Also, support groups can give you emotional and social support.

Drug Rehab
People can’t simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients need long-term or repeated drug rehab care to stop using completely and recover their lives.

Mental health and substance use disorders affect people from all walks of life and all age groups. These illnesses are common, recurrent, and often severe but treatable, and many people recover. Mental disorders involve changes in thinking, mood, and behavior. These disorders can affect how we relate to others and make choices. Reaching a level that can be formally diagnosed often depends on a reduction in a person’s ability to function due to the disorder.
