What Happens When You Mix Cocaine And Ketamine Together?

Using Cocaine and Ketamine Together? Learn the Dangers, Effects, Long-Term Complications & Rehab Treatment.

What is Cocaine?

Normally when we think of drug abuse, the immediate thing that comes to mind is when someone takes drugs every day, several times. But with cocaine addiction, signs can be ambiguous. You do not have to be taking cocaine, or crack cocaine, every day to be addicted to it. A sign of addiction is that you’ve tried to cut down or stop but are unable to. Any use of cocaine is considered abuse because it is an illegal substance.

Even when cocaine is a highly addictive drug, one of its main issues is that it may be hard to recognize its addiction. For example, craving cocaine, even if the use or need appears every few days, and ignoring the consequences that come with it are signs of an addiction.

Psychological addiction is often the hardest part to overcome, although there are undeniable physical symptoms of addiction. Someone who uses cocaine frequently will develop a dependence on it, meaning they need to have it to feel normal.

Once dependence has developed, a tolerance will develop and withdrawal symptoms will occur when stopping use. Once someone becomes addicted to cocaine, it can be very hard to stop. This is because cocaine abnormally increases the level of dopamine in the brain, eventually reprogramming the brain reward system.

Cocaine is a stimulant, meaning it increases alertness and energy. It affects the neural pathways in your brain, leading you to feel talkative, energetic, and euphoric. Cocaine addiction can develop quickly, even after trying it only a few times. An addiction can be physical, meaning your body craves the drug. It can also be mental, meaning you strongly desire the drug’s effects. Moreover, Cocaine can be consumed in a variety of ways.

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine (brand name: Ketalar) is a dissociative injected anesthetic (blocks sensory perception) that has been available by prescription in the U.S. since the 1970s for human and veterinary uses. Esketamine (Spravato), the S-enantiomer of racemic ketamine, was approved in 2019 for treatment-resistant depression and is approved for use in depressed patients with acute suicidal ideation or behavior. Ketaset is the brand name of surgical anesthesia used by veterinarians

Dissociative drugs can lead to distortion of sights, colors, sounds, self, and one’s environment. Ketamine is available in a clear liquid or off-white powder form for intravenous injection or as a nasal spray. Examples of other dissociative drugs include phencyclidine (PCP) and dextromethorphan (DXM).

In the U.S., ketamine is classified as a schedule III drug under the DEA Controlled Substances Act; however, it is not classified as an opioid (narcotic) or barbiturate.

Can You Mix Cocaine and Ketamine? What is the difference between ketamine and cocaine?

Using any drug has a risk associated with it, particularly for long-term use which can lead to severe side effects (we’ve written about the side effects of ketamine here). It helps to understand more about each separate drug before we look at what happens when you combine them.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic and sedative drug

It is well known for being a ‘club drug’. In terms of its effect, some people report a feeling of lightness – kind of like if they were walking on the moon. Other effects can be more overwhelming, including having vivid hallucinations or increased anxiety. You may have heard of a k-hole, which is when a user on ketamine may become unresponsive as they are having hallucinations.

Cocaine is a stimulant

Most users take cocaine to boost energy levels, which is why it can also be found on the clubbing and festival scene. It is said to provide feelings of euphoria and make users feel like they don’t need food or sleep whilst it is in the body. The effects are short-lived, but the drug is highly addictive to try and reach those heightened feelings time and time again.

Taken together? What is the effect of using cocaine and ketamine together?

The combination of cocaine and ketamine has been dubbed ‘Calvin Klein’; this is the street name you may have heard before. Cocaine has often been used to enhance the effects of other drugs due to its stimulating properties, which can be dangerous, especially with ketamine.

Each drug has physical side effects.

Cocaine Side Effects

For a short time, cocaine has stimulating effects on the body. It causes a naturally occurring neurotransmitter called dopamine to increase its concentration in the brain. This causes feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. Cocaine causes your dopamine levels to rise to cause the user to feel euphoric.

Cocaine prevents dopamine, and other neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, from being taken up into the nerve cells. This allows large amounts of neurotransmitters to accumulate and stimulate the surrounding nerve cells. This heightens the pleasurable sense of euphoria. Cocaine side effects can also minimize your desire for sleep and food. Some people report that cocaine helps them think and perform tasks more quickly. Many users begin to crave the feelings that cocaine creates.

Frequent use of cocaine can cause you to develop a higher tolerance to the drug. A high tolerance means it takes more of the drug for you to feel its effects. This may lead to using greater amounts of it, which can impact your mental and physical health.

Mixing Cocaine and Ketamine

Combining cocaine and ketamine is commonly known as Calvin Klein or CK Blend. This is a dangerous combination that can result in major cardiovascular consequences and, in some cases, death. Mixing cocaine and ketamine can produce a range of intense effects, including extreme euphoria, cardiovascular manifestations, and psychosis.

These are both powerful, mind-altering drugs with the ability to result in fatal overdose as individual substances taken alone. Risks and the potential for life-threatening effects increase when these substances are mixed.

What Is “Calvin Klein”?

The combination of cocaine and ketamine is known as “Calvin Klein” or “CK blend.” It’s a widely abused party drug across the world, most often snorted to result in powerful euphoric highs and hallucinations. This mixture of cocaine and ketamine has become more popular among younger generations, including teenagers and college students.

Risks Of Mixing Cocaine And Ketamine (Calvin Klein, CK Blend)

Both cocaine and ketamine are highly addictive, mind-altering drugs. The substances work by blocking dopamine transporters, resulting in a build-up of dopamine. When mixed, cocaine and ketamin can create “Calkin Klein” (CK), and effects such as violent behaviors, bad trips, and psychotic reactions can set in.

Extreme Euphoria And Hallucinations

Both cocaine and ketamine have stimulant properties. Many people use CK to experience an extremely high, but this is very dangerous. The hallucinogenic effects usually last anywhere between a few minutes to an hour. If the effects wear off and a person wants more of the same feeling, they’re at risk of fatally overdosing.

Extreme euphoria can also create a “bad trip,” characterized by:

These effects and other undesired outcomes can cause impaired judgment, leading to dangerous situations and behavior.

Cardiovascular Complications

If a person overdoses on CK, they can experience several potentially fatal cardiovascular complications. By blocking dopamine transporters, repeated doses of cocaine and ketamine can result in high levels of catecholamine, hormones in the brain released when under physical or emotional stress. Catecholamines include dopamine and norepinephrine. A major build-up of these neurotransmitters can lead to dysrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat rhythm) and cardiac arrest.

Using CK can cause:

  • Heart attack
  • Heart palpitations
  • Increased heart rate
  • Sudden death

Mixing Cocaine And Ketamine Can Be Fatal

The U.S. National Library of Medicine published a case study of a girl who fatally overdosed on CK in 2019. Researchers found that both cocaine and ketamine are extremely potent and dangerous by themselves, and when taken together, life-threatening symptoms can occur. The study found that ketamine has been associated with a high risk for abuse and fatality.
